چکیده

Desynchronization is a biologically inspired primitive [8] for periodic but temporary exclusive access to a shared resource, like the transmission medium. In this paper, we recapitulate the single-hop desynchronization algorithm DESYNC [5, 2, 6] for Wireless Sensor Networks (WSNs) and identify its lack of handling hidden nodes in multi-hop environments. We explain in detail our decentralized and selforganizing multi-hop extension EXTENDED-DESYNC, solving the hidden node problem although it uses just locally available information. We further inspect several scenarios and topologies to prove convergence of our algorithm and to demonstrate its robustness and flexibility against dynamic changes within multi-hop Wireless Sensor Networks, like adding or removing nodes. We thus show that EXTENDEDDESYNC desynchronizes well in spite of hidden nodes. We finally outline a few useful add-ons for our algorithm and its possible fields of application.

Desynchronization in Multi-Hop Topologies: A Challenge

The biologically inspired primitive desynchronization was successfully implemented and tested within single-hop topologies in form of the self-organizing TDMA protocol DESYNC for wireless sensor networks (WSNs). Two extensions of that MAC protocol for multi-hop topologies have been discussed, but either the extended protocol is not all-purpose but specified for just a specific subset of multi-h...

Stable Desynchronization for Wireless Sensor Networks: (I) Concepts and Algorithms

Desynchronization is one of the primitive services for complex networks because it arranges nodes to take turns accessing a shared resource. TDMA is a practical application of desynchronization because it allows node to share a common medium. In this paper, we propose a novel desynchronization algorithm using artificial force field called Multi-hop Desynchronization With an ARtificial Force fie...

Towards Energy Efficient LPWANs through Learning-based Multi-hop Routing for the Uplink

Low-power wide area networks (LPWANs) have been identified as one of the top emerging wireless technologies due to their autonomy and wide range of applications. Yet, the limited energy resources of battery-powered sensor nodes is a top constraint; specially when adopting single-hop topologies since nodes located far from the base station must transmit in high power levels. On this point, multi...

Design of Energy Efficient Topologies for Wireless On-Body Channel

Advanced applications in the area of remote health monitoring can be realized by Wireless Body Area Networks (WBANs). This paper investigates the physical propagation channel at 2.45 GHz near real humans and presents an application for cross-layer design in order to optimize the energy consumption of single-hop and multi-hop network topologies. The characterization of the physical layer is an i...

Dependability Evaluation of a Class of Multi-Loop Topologies for Local Area Networks

Local area networks have been developed using both ring and bus topologies. Multi-loop and multi-connected topologies have been proposed to improve the throughput and dependability of single-loop networks. We evaluate the dependability of a class of multi-connected loop topologies called forward loop, backward hop (FLBH) networks and compare them to simple ring networks.
